Fenugreek Seeds
Fenugreek Seeds
Fenugreek Seeds (Trigonella foenum-graecum)—commonly known as Methi Seeds—are a versatile spice crop with a strong presence in culinary, medicinal, and industrial applications. Known for their slightly bitter, nutty flavor and potent health properties, these seeds have been used for centuries in traditional cuisines and herbal remedies across the world.
Methi seeds are small, hard, yellowish-brown seeds with a distinctive aroma and flavor that intensifies when roasted. They are widely used in spice blends, pickles, and lentil dishes, particularly in Indian, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean cuisines. In addition to their culinary importance, fenugreek seeds are valued for their therapeutic benefits—supporting digestion, blood sugar regulation, and lactation—and are often used in herbal supplements and cosmetic formulations.
India is by far the leading producer and exporter of methi seeds, particularly from states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. The crop thrives in dry, cool climates and is typically harvested once a year during the rabi season. Additional producing regions include Egypt, Morocco, and parts of the Mediterranean.
Major importing countries include Bangladesh, the UAE, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Germany, and the United States, with demand driven by both the spice trade and nutraceutical sectors. The seeds are traded in whole and powdered form, depending on end-user requirements.
